Is it Living life or we are all Just trying to Survive?
Walking down from the bus stop to my place of work is like another fifteen minutes exercise after alighting from the bus. So on this beautiful bright day while on my way to the office and the time was 7:57am, I saw this Danfo driver sleeping at the driver's seat with his head laid on the front door of his vehicle. Such a pitiful sight to behold early in the morning.
The shout for passengers by the driver in front of him jerked him awake suddenly and he continues his call for passengers like nothing happened. It was clear that he needs more rest and he looked so tired, even though it is just early in the morning. Knowing there are bills to pay gave him no other option than to continue his quest for his daily bread? or is it daily crumbs?
Why did I say crumbs? Most times I wonder how much these drivers go home with at the end of the day. Is it money for garage tickets? Agberos? Area boys? Officers? Petrol/Diesel for the vehicle? Vehicle maintenance? Unexplained breakdown by vehicle sometimes? Though most times passengers bear the increase in transportation cost. And God help the driver, he must have paid all these dues and the vehicle broke down in the middle of the road, passengers will definitely demand for their money to board another vehicle.
This made me remember a time I was younger and in secondary school. My school was outside Lagos so it's traveling and we had already paid at the garage. Our bus broke down in the middle of no where and before we could say jack or got down from the vehicle, the driver was no where to be found. He had disappeared.
I learnt very young that, if you want to travel anywhere, either far or near, you must leave home with excess money to avoid been stranded on the road.
And the driver that is not the owner of the vehicle? After money for deliver, how much will he be left with?
Another evening, I was going back home from work and I board a J5 Danfo. Everyone in the bus looked tired including myself. Unfortunately, our driver is a kind of sluggish that I can't even find words to describe. To link to the highway going to our destination, our bus has to go across the railway line that is still under construction. So many motorists find it difficult to cross the mound of sand beside the rail and we passengers had to get down and walk to the highway to wait for the driver to cross the rail, its either we go down, or have our hearts in our mouth because I know our driver will find it difficult to cross the rail. One man was like "What is this delay, I need to get home and rest, I don't need this stress". Very funny, because we all looked worn and stressed out already.
